Learn why STQC certification for CCTV cameras has become mandatory in India from April 2025, ensuring safety, reliability, and cybersecurity compliance.
The quality of security and surveillance systems is a very important aspect when we talk about protecting our homes, offices, and public spaces. There are so many CCTV cameras and surveillance products available in the market, so how do we know which one is the most trustable, reliable, and safe?
This is why STQC (Standardisation Testing and Quality Certification) becomes important. Now, let us understand more about it.
STQC stands for Standardisation Testing and Quality Certification. It is a certification process managed by the Government of India under the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY). STQC certifies a wide range of IT and electronic systems such as CCTV cameras, biometric devices, and access control solutions.
In April 2025, the Indian government made STQC certification mandatory for all CCTV products. This was a very important decision for India’s security and surveillance industry. It means that from now on, only STQC-certified CCTV cameras will be allowed to be sold in the market. This move was taken to protect citizens, reduce the risk of data breaches, and strengthen trust in Indian-made security solutions.
In simple terms, STQC is a guarantee that the CCTV or surveillance system you are buying is trust-worthy, reliable, and of high-quality. To understand more about how STQC evaluates CCTV cameras, refer to the official STQC procedure document on CCTV certification.
Why is STQC important for India’s Security and Surveillance Industry?
1. Ensure reliable performance: As CCTV cameras and security devices often need to work 24/7 to protect people and their property. So STQC certified products are tested for reliability and durability, so that they can work properly in challenging conditions like poor weather conditions, low-lighting, or complete darkness.
2. Protects against Cyber Crime: As most advanced cameras and security devices are connected to the internet. So, if these devices are not properly safeguarded, they can be hacked which can lead to sensitive data getting leaked, or privacy breaches. So, STQC certification ensures that these devices are tested for cybersecurity and are far less vulnerable to hacking or data breaches.
3. Meets Government Standards: Government has made it necessary to use only certified devices for sensitive areas such as airports, metro stations, government offices, and defense sites. This move of the government can be very helpful to secure national infrastructure.
4. Eliminates Fake and Low-Quality Devices: As there are a number of CCTV cameras and security devices in the market, it becomes hard for people to choose the best security device for them. They often chose cheap, duplicate, and low-quality cameras that were not reliable, durable, and secure. If a security device has STQC certification, you can choose it with confidence, as STQC rejects low-quality CCTV brands and surveillance devices that don’t meet the standards.
STQC tells you that the security system you are using is officially tested, certified, and approved by the Government of India.
The Recent Update: What Changed in 2024–2025?
Before April 2024, CCTV cameras only had to pass the basic quality checks like picture quality, durability, etc. There were no cybersecurity checks which means there was no proof if a camera will never be hacked, and many cameras without proper password protection, encryption, or software security were sold in the market.
So every IP/Network camera being sold in the market is secure, trustworthy, and safe to use.
Note: Analog Cameras are exempted from these cybersecurity rules as they are not connected to the internet so they won’t go through hacking or cyber threats. They still need to meet basic quality and safety standards.
